A Medicare
supplemental insurance or Medigap policy is health insurance
sold by various private insurance companies. These policies are
intended to fill in the "gaps" in Medicare plan coverage. These
plans may help pay for some of the costs that Medicare does not
cover such as co-payments, deductibles and co-insurance. If an
individual is on Medicare and has a supplemental policy, each
plan will pay its share of the covered health care costs.
Each and every Medicare supplemental insurance policy must
adhere to Federal and state laws designed to protect the
individual and must be clearly identified as "Medicare
Supplemental Insurance". In most states, insurance companies can
only sell standardized supplemental policies identified by the
letters A through N. Each policy must offer the same basic
benefits no matter which insurance company is selling it. The
only difference between Medigap policies with the same letter
sold by different insurance companies is the cost. All types of
Medigap plans are not available in all states and Medicare
Advantage plans (Part C) such as an HMO, PPO, or private fee for
service plans and Part D Medicare prescription drug plans are
not Medicare supplemental insurance policies. Married couples
must each purchase their own separate Medigap policies as these
policies will not cover any costs for a spouse.
The optimum time to purchase a Medicare supplemental insurance
policy is during the open enrollment period. Open enrollment
lasts for 6 months beginning on the first day of the month that
an individual turns 65 or older and enrolled in Medicare Part B.
There maybe be additional open enrollment periods for people
under the age of 65 in certain states. During open enrollment,
an insurance company cannot refuse to sell a policy due to
health problems but it may be able to make the individual wait
for coverage if they have a pre-existing condition. The
insurance company can refuse to cover out of pocket expenses for
pre-existing health issues for up to six months but regular
Medicare coverage will still cover the condition. The individual
is still responsible for co-payments or co-insurance. After the
six month waiting period, these conditions will be covered by
the supplemental policy.
It is important to purchase a Medicare supplemental insurance
policy during open enrollment. During open enrollment, if there
are pre-existing health conditions, any Medigap policy an
insurance company sells can be purchased for the same price as
someone with no health issues. After the open enrollment period,
there is no guarantee that the insurance company will sell a
policy if the individual does not meet the medical underwriting
requirements.
The decision to purchase a Medicare supplemental insurance
policy is an important one. Individuals should shop carefully
and compare policies that are available to see which ones meet
their needs. Keep in mind that not all insurance companies offer
all of the supplemental policies and they each may charge
different amounts for the same policies. A wider choice of
Medigap policies and a lower premium will be available during
the open enrollment period when turning 65.
